I joined the laboratories of Prof. Alessi and Dr. Muqit as a postdoctoral researcher in October 2016. My project aims to elucidate the regulation of Rab GTPases by LRRK2 and PINK1 signalling pathways in Parkison’s Disease.

I obtained my PhD from the Institut du thorax, University of Nantes, France. I worked under the supervision of Dr Céline Marionneau and Dr Flavien Charpentier to determine how phosphorylation of Nav1.5, the main voltage-gated sodium channel expressed in the heart, regulates normal and diseased cardiac excitability.

I obtained my PhD from Cardiff University, as a student on the Wellcome Trust Four-Year PhD Programme in Integrative Neuroscience. Under the supervision of Prof. Alun M. Davies FRS and Prof. Stephen B. Dunnett FMedSci (co-supervisor), I investigated how members of the TNF/TNFR superfamily influence neuronal survival, axonal growth and the establishment of neural circuits in both central and peripheral nervous systems, using a variety of cell biological and in vivo approaches. Prior to my arrival in the UK, I graduated top of my class, with a first class BSc (Hons) degree in Biochemistry from the National University of Ireland, Galway.

I obtained my medical qualification as well as M.D. from the Ludwig-Maximilian’s University in Munich, Germany (2002/3). I then established my interest in basic and clinical neuroscience when I moved to the University of Heidelberg and worked in Professor Hannah Monyer’s laboratory simultaneous with my postgraduate training in neurology under Professor Hacke.

I started working in Dario’s group in September 2010 after being awarded a Fellowship in the Wellcome Trust PhD Programme for Clinicians. My speciality is neurology and my clinical as well as scientific interests focus on neurodegeneration and movement disorders. Over the next 3 years I worked on the signalling pathway of the Fbxo7 protein and its role in hereditary Parkinsonism.

I am currently on a 4-year MRC Prize Studentship programme. I commenced my PhD in October 2013 and carried out my first rotation in Philip Cohen’s lab where I studied the regulation of IFNβ production in the innate immune system. Subsequently, I carried out my second rotation in Dario Alessi’s lab and continued on to study my PhD in the regulation and function of SGK3, a component of the PI3K signalling pathway, implicated in cancer.

My previous studies include an MRes in Medical & Molecular Biosciences, at the University of Newcastle for which I attained Distinction. Here, I worked on reversing glucocorticoid resistance in acute lymphoblastic leukaemia. Prior to this, I was studying Medicine (MBBS) at Durham University for 3 years but decided to convert my Medical studies to a BSc(Hons) in Biology instead.

I have been providing technical support in the lab since June 2004.

In 1995 I graduated from Stirling University with a degree in Biology then moved on to the post of malt analyst in a small malting company. After 4 years, too much beer and whiskey, and a promotion to Team Leader, I moved to the post of Reagents Chemist within the Research and Development Dept. of a Dundee University spin-out company.

In 2001 I took up a post at Dundee University with the Transgenic Service. Immediately prior to joining Dario's group I was employed as a Scientific Officer with another Dundee University spin-out company where I was involved in preclinical drug development and chemical safety assessments.
