The Sequencing Service Logo

Background
The DNA sequencing service was established in 1999 and offers a range of services using the latest cutting edge technologies. The service, managed by Dr Nicholas Helps, offers its services to the MRC Unit and to external customers. Technologies
The technologies employed include: two Applied Biosystems 3730 DNA sequencers that between them can process over 1,700 DNA sequencing samples per day, with a maximum read length of around 1000 bases. In addition, Qiagen Bio-Robots are used to automate bacterial plasmid DNA mini-preps. Other equipment used by the service includes PCR engines, 96 well plate centrifuges and a Nano-drop spectrophotometer.

Services
In addition to DNA sequencing, the service has the ability to run genotyping samples of various types. Other services such as primer walking and larger scale sequencing projects are also provided. Regular DNA sequencing and genotyping samples are turned around typically in 24 hours from receipt. The services also offer bacterial plasmid DNA mini-prepping (using robot, workstations) maxi-prepping and genomic DNA extraction from animal tissue samples are available. Consultation with customers prior to the onset of a project, during and after comes as a standard service.

Customer Base
They currently provide DNA sequencing and related services to around 320 research groups based throughout the UK mainland and Ireland. These groups are within both academic institutions and the industry/biotech sector. A large number of these groups have been customers for many years due to the excellent range and quality of services offered.
