A postdoctoral research position is available in Dr. Greg Findlay’s laboratory to investigate functions of the ERK5 MAP kinase in pluripotent Embryonic Stem (ES) cell biology.

The Findlay lab employs cutting-edge technologies to unravel ES cell signalling networks (Williams et al, Cell Rep 2016, Fernandez-Alonso et al, EMBO Rep 2017; Bustos et al, Cell Rep 2018), culminating in our recent discovery of the ERK5 pathway as an exciting new regulator of ES cell pluripotency. In order to uncover mechanisms by which ERK5 controls ES cell biology, this project will deploy global proteomic and phosphoproteomic profiling. Novel ERK5 substrates and transcriptional networks will be characterised using biochemical and cell biology approaches. A further aim is to investigate functions of ERK5 in patient-derived human iPS cell maintenance and lineage-specific differentiation.

This research will be undertaken in the MRC Protein Phosphorylation and Ubiquitylation Unit (MRC-PPU), based within the School of Life Sciences at the University of Dundee. The MRC-PPU is one of the world’s leading centres studying the role of protein phosphorylation in health and disease. The successful applicant will have access to state-of-the-art tools to dissect signalling networks, and opportunity for interaction with three major Pharmaceutical companies that support the MRC-PPU via the Division of Signal Transduction Therapy. The Findlay lab is also affiliated with the Division of Cell and Developmental Biology, which contains world experts in stem cell research.

Situated on a beautiful estuary close to some of Scotland’s most spectacular scenery, Dundee offers affordable living and a perfect blend of coast and countryside. The city is developing into a major cultural hub, culminating in the opening of the iconic V&A Dundee Art Gallery in September 2018.

Candidate requirements:

• Recent PhD with outstanding academic track record and at least one first authored publication in an internationally recognised peer-reviewed journal

• Strong background in biochemistry and cell & molecular biology is required

• Experience in stem cell techniques is desirable but not essential

• Capable of working in a team, but able to plan and work independently

• Excellent communication skills and knowledge of the English language are essential for this project

Appointment as a Postdoctoral Research Assistant on the Grade 7 salary scale is dependent upon you having been awarded a PhD. An appointment may be considered if you are shortly expected to be awarded a PhD. The initial appointment will be made as a Research Assistant on the Training Grade 7 salary scale (Spinal Point 28, £30,688).

For informal enquiries please contact Greg Findlay (g.m.findlay@dundee.ac.uk). The postdoctoral position will be for 3 years on the University of Dundee grade 7 scale (£31,604-£38,833).
