Applications are invited for a Medical Research Council-funded postdoctoral position to work with Sir Philip Cohen on a project aimed at identifying the role of ester-linked ubiquitin chains in regulating signalling networks of the immune system. The project will build on recent and unexpected discoveries made in Philip’s laboratory which have revealed that HOIL-1 is an atypical E3 ligase that attaches ubiquitin to serine and threonine residues in proteins, forming ester bonds. The position, which is for two years in the first instance, can commence from January 2021, but applicants wishing to start at any time up to April 1st 2021 will be considered.

Candidate requirements:

• PhD with an outstanding academic track record and at least one first-authored publication in an internationally recognised peer-reviewed journal.

• Previous experience in protein chemistry, protein ubiquitylation or mass spectrometry is essential and candidates should have a strong interest in cell signalling.

• Capable of working in a team, but able to plan and work independently.

• Excellent communication skills and knowledge of the English language are essential.

MRC Protein Phosphorylation and Ubiquitylation Unit (PPU) and School of Life Sciences (SLS):

The project will be performed in the MRC Protein Phosphorylation and Ubiquitylation Unit (MRC PPU) and School of Life Sciences (SLS) at the University of Dundee, which are located in the Sir James Black Centre and Wellcome Trust Building at the University of Dundee, overlooking the estuary of the River Tay. The MRC PPU is one of the world’s leading centres for research on the role of phosphorylation and ubiquitylation in regulating cell signalling pathways.

Appointment as a Postdoctoral Research Assistant on the Grade 7 salary scale is dependent upon you having been awarded a PhD. An appointment may be considered if you have submitted but not yet been awarded a PhD thesis, but the initial appointment will be made as a Research Assistant on the Training Grade 7 salary scale (Spinal Point 28, £31,688) until the PhD has been awarded.
