Applications are invited for a postdoctoral position in the Laboratory of Dr. Yogesh Kulathu to study the mechanisms by which protein quality control and proteostasis are regulated by the ubiquitin system. We are seeking enthusiastic and motivated individuals with a strong background in cell biology and biochemistry to undertake exciting and cutting-edge research aimed at unravelling pathways and mechanisms by which cells maintain proteostasis.

The Kulathu lab uses a multidisciplinary approach in their research and employ techniques ranging from X-ray crystallography and biophysics, to yeast genetics and cell biology. The aims of the projects available in the lab are to explore the functional roles of components of the ubiquitin system the lab has recently discovered (unpublished). Broadly, we are looking for candidates to work on understanding how these newly identified components of the ubiquitin system fine tune protein degradation in a cell to maintain proteostasis. We are also interested in investigating underlying mechanisms using genetic screens, reconstitution systems and in vivo reporter models developed in the lab.

Candidates with interests in one or more of the following areas: ubiquitylation, protein quality control, neurodegeneration and signal transduction mechanisms regulated by posttranslational modifications, are encouraged to apply. The candidate should have a strong academic track record, background and experience in cell biology and biochemistry. It is expected that the candidate will develop and apply a broad range of techniques to pursue the research objectives. The project will involve using the cutting-edge facilities in biochemistry, cell biology, in vivo models, high-resolution microscopy and proteomics available within the School of Life Sciences

Candidate requirements:

• PhD (or final stages of PhD) in a relevant biological subject with research experience in protein biochemistry or cell biology or proteomics.

• Strong academic track record with at least one good quality first author publication in peer-reviewed journals.
• Ability to work independently, but capable of interacting well within a group

• Excellent communication skills and proficiency in English

Appointment as a Postdoctoral Research Assistant on the Grade 7 salary scale is dependent upon you having been awarded a PhD. An appointment may be considered if you are shortly expected to be awarded a PhD. The initial appointment will be made as a Research Assistant on the Training Grade 7 salary scale (Spinal Point 28, £30,688).
