Summary of Job Purpose and Principal Duties

We are seeking a postdoctoral researcher with expertise in the latest cutting-edge mass spectrometry techniques and a keen interest in neurodegenerative disease research to undertake collaborative studies with groups based within the UK Dementia Research Institute (UK DRI – http://ukdri.ac.uk/). The UK DRI brings together expertise from six leading UK universities to research the key questions in neurodegenerative disease and accelerate the development of treatments.

The work will focus on undertaking high sensitivity quantitative proteomic analysis including analysis of post-translational modifications in isolated brain cells, to better understand aetiology of Alzheimer’s and other neurodegenerative conditions. The post-holder will also coordinate mass-spectrometry based proteomics for all seven UK DRI centres, liaising with external expert labs and the wider proteomics community to provide the most relevant techniques to address a given problem.

Summary of Skills, Experience and Qualifications

Significant experience in designing and executing proteomic workflows as well as hands on expertise in operating instruments such as Orbitrap Lumos, Exploris and/or Bruker timsTOF is essential. Experience of managing a collaborative or multisite research project or multiple concurrent streams of research is desirable.

Candidate Requirements:

• PhD with academic track record in mass spectrometry with at least one first authored publication in an internationally recognised peer-reviewed journal.
• Strong background in Mass Spectrometry operation and data analysis.
• Keen interest in neurodegenerative disease research.
• A good understanding of statistics relevant to mass spectrometry.
• Experience of managing a collaborative or multisite research project or multiple concurrent streams of research is desirable.
• Experience in Python, R and/or MATLab and ability to write and develop scripts as well as modify and implement open source or published code is desirable.
• Capable of working in a team, and able to plan and work independently.
• Excellent communication skills and knowledge of the English language.

College / School / Directorate Information

This is a joint appointment between the University of Dundee and the UK DRI, and the appointed researcher will be based in the laboratory of Dario Alessi within the University of Dundee’s MRC Protein Phosphorylation and Ubiquitylation Unit (MRC PPU) and will also report to Sam Jackson (UK DRI Tools & Technology Platform Manager).

The position is fixed term. Salary will depend on experience, but the appointment will be made on the University's Grade 8 salary scale.
