Abstract: Small Ubiquitin-like Modifier (SUMO) is linked to target proteins via a pathway that is mechanistically similar, but quite distinct, from that of ubiquitin. Once SUMO is conjugated to target proteins it is recognised by effector proteins containing SUMO Interaction Motifs (SIMs) that are responsible for generating the biological outputs associated with SUMO modification. In the talk I will discuss recent work from the lab that illustrates the role of SUMO in determining the chromatin environment of human induced pluripotent stem cells, in inducing the degradation of an oncogene and in regulating nuclear structure.
