The 2nd Dundee-Edinburgh Parkinson’s Research Initiative Symposium at the Royal College of Physicians in Edinburgh on March 22, 2019 was a great success. Organized by Dr Esther Sammler, the event attracted over 90 attendees and a line-up of 15 speakers who gave us a taste of the diverse and rich landscape of basic and clinical Parkinson’s disease research in Scotland. A particular highlight were the talks by the 3 PhD students of the new Dundee Edinburgh Parkinson’s PhD programme funded by the Initiative: Kerryn Berndsen supervised by Professor Dario Alessi and Dr Tilo Kunath even won the price for the best presentation sponsored by the Dundee Parkinson's Research Interest Group for her work on “The identification of phosphatases involved in the LRRK2-Rab signalling pathway”. Our keynote speaker was Professor Alexander Zimprich from Vienna University in Austria who discovered mutations in e-sarcoglycan as a cause for myoclonus-dystonia, but importantly also LRRK2 and VPS35 as a cause for Parkinson’s disease.
