Ex-MRC PPU Postdocs awarded major collaborative EU grant

Ex-MRC PPU Postdocs Ana Belén Pérez Oliva (Postdoc in the Alessi lab 2011-2015), Christophe Lachaud (Postdoc in Rouse lab 2011-2016) and Jenny van Asbeck-van der Wijst (Postdoc in the Alessi lab 2011-2013) have been awarded a €2.7 million EU collaborative grant to develop a new RNA-based therapy for patients suffering from congenital anemia. The acronym of the project is NANEMIAR and a www.nanemiar.eu website for the project is under construction. The project aims to exploit and test mRNA technology to develop a novel targeted nanomedicine that allows for correct production of red blood cells in congenital anemia patients by expression of deficient proteins. Ana is based at the Instituto Murciano de Investigación Biosaniraria, Christophe at the Cancer research Center of Marseille, whilst Jenny is Chief Executive Officer of Mercurna, an mRNA therapeutics company. Dario Alessi MRC PPU director said "Its fantastic news to see that 3 postdocs who all started in the PPU in 2011, are still working together to develop badly needed treatments for complex congenital anemias. I wish them success for this important project."
