Congratulations Professor Muqit !

We are delighted to announce that MRC-PPU PI Miratul Muqit has been promoted to the rank of Professor.

Miratul joined the MRC-PPU after he completed his clinical neurology training in 2008, to investigate the role of the Parkinson's disease PINK1 protein kinase that he played a key role in uncovering during his PhD in the laboratory of Nicholas Wood (UCL).

Over the last 10 years Miratul and his laboratory have made major contributions to understanding PINK1, including discovering two of its physiological susbtrates (Parkin and Ubiquitin). Miratul also played a leading role in showing how PINK1 mediated phosphorylation of Parkin and Ubiquitin stimulates the E3 ligase activity of Parkin triggering mitophagy. Miratul has also discovered that PINK1 activation regulates the phosphorylation of distinct Rab proteins such as Rab8A (Ser111).

Miratul's lab is now investigating further the mechanism of activation and regulation of PINK1 and exploring whether activators of this pathway could be developed and deployed as a a new strategy to treat Parkinson's disease. Understanding how Rab phosphorylation is controlled by PINK1 is also a key question that Miratul is addressing in his current research.

Miratul has also set up a major clinic in Dundee for patients with young onset inherited Parkinson's disease - the first of its kind in Scotland. He is also playing a major role in developing Parkinson's and clinical research at the University of Dundee and beyond.
