Summary of Job Purpose and Principal Duties

The Medical Research Council Protein Phosphorylation and Ubiquitylation Unit (MRC PPU, http://www.ppu.mrc.ac.uk/) is a major research facility embedded within the college of Life Sciences at the University of Dundee. Our research is aimed at understanding how protein phosphorylation and ubiquitylation regulates biological processes and how disruptions of pathways controlled by phosphorylation and/or ubiquitylation cause major human diseases.

We are seeking to appoint a Postdoctoral Researcher who will be based in the group of Dr Virginia De Cesare, to study the role of non-lysine ubiquitylation in eukaryotic cells. This work aims to build upon ground-breaking recent discoveries that have uncovered the relevance of non-lysine ubiquitylation in a variety of cellular processes and signalling pathways. We aim to better understand the downstream biology controlled by this novel ubiquitin modification. This includes (1) the discovery and characterization of E2 conjugating enzymes and E3 ligases catalysing non-lysine ubiquitylation and (2) the development of mass spectrometry methods to detect and quantify non-lysine ubiquitylation in complex samples.

For informal enquiries please contact Virginia De Cesare (v.decesare@dundee.ac.uk).

Summary of Skills, Experience and Qualifications

  • PhD with a good academic track record and at least one first author publication in a high quality, peer-reviewed scientific journal.
  • Strong background in one or more of the following: Mass Spectrometry, Molecular Biology and/or Structural biology would be preferable.
  • Strong background in protein post-translational modifications (PTMs) such as phosphorylation and ubiquitylation.
  • Ability to work in an interdisciplinary group, and manage collaborations
  • Excellent communication skills and knowledge of the English language are essential.

Appointment as a Postdoctoral Researcher on the Grade 7 salary scale is dependent upon you having been awarded a PhD. An appointment may be considered if you are shortly expected to be awarded a PhD. In this case the initial appointment would be made as a Research Assistant on the Training Grade 7 salary scale.
